You’ve booked your Dillon Beach weekend. You’ve packed your bags. You open the weather app and see a row of rain clouds. Don’t panic. Seriously — some of our favorite days on this coast happen when it’s raining.

Rain is part of the deal at Dillon Beach, especially between November and March. The coast gets about 30 inches a year, and most of it falls in winter. But a rainy day here isn’t a ruined day. It’s a different kind of day — one that might end up being the highlight of your trip.

Lean Into the Rental

The best rainy-day activity at Dillon Beach is the simplest one: stay in. If you’ve picked a good rental, a rainy day is when you really appreciate it. Here’s how to make the most of being indoors.

Cook a big meal

You have a full kitchen — use it. Stop at the grocery store in Petaluma on the way in and stock up. Make something slow. A pot of clam chowder with sourdough bread. A big pasta. A roast chicken. The kind of meal you never make at home because you’re always in a rush. Open a bottle of wine. Take your time. The whole point of being at the coast is slowing down, and rain gives you permission.

Watch the storm

A winter storm at Dillon Beach is a show. The waves build, the sky goes dark and dramatic, and rain sweeps across the water in sheets. Pull a chair up to the window, make a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and just watch. If your rental has a covered porch or deck, bundle up and sit outside. The sound of rain on a coastal roof with the ocean in the background is hypnotic.

Board games and puzzles

Many rentals have a stash of board games and puzzles. If yours doesn’t, bring a few. Cards, Scrabble, a jigsaw puzzle — simple entertainment that works perfectly with the vibe. A rainy afternoon playing games with your family while rain drums on the roof is the kind of memory that sticks.

Read a book

When was the last time you sat down and read for three hours straight? A rainy day at the coast is the time. Bring something you’ve been meaning to read. If you forgot a book, Point Reyes Books in Point Reyes Station is one of the best independent bookstores in California — and it’s only 25 minutes away.

Point Reyes Station (25 min)

The small town of Point Reyes Station is the best rainy-day destination near Dillon Beach. It’s charming without being twee, and there’s enough to fill a pleasant few hours.

Point Reyes Books

A beautifully curated independent bookstore with an excellent selection of fiction, nature writing, and local interest titles. The kind of place where you walk in for five minutes and emerge an hour later with three books you didn’t know you needed.

Cowgirl Creamery

One of the most respected artisan cheese makers in America, right here in this little town. Visit the retail shop and tasting counter. Try the Mt. Tam (a buttery triple-crème) and the Red Hawk (a washed-rind that’s funky and wonderful). Buy some cheese, crackers, and charcuterie for your rental — instant rainy-night appetizer board.

Galleries and shops

Point Reyes Station has a handful of art galleries, a great outdoor gear shop, and several small boutiques. Nothing is overly commercial — it feels like a real town, not a tourist strip. The galleries feature local artists, and the quality is higher than you’d expect for a town this size.

Cafes and lunch

Side Street Kitchen serves excellent lunch. Station House Cafe is a local institution. Grab a warm meal and a good cup of coffee. Sitting in a cozy cafe while rain falls outside is one of life’s underrated pleasures.

Petaluma (30 min)

If you want more options, Petaluma is a real town with a beautiful historic downtown. It’s about 30 minutes east and well worth the drive on a rainy day.

Downtown shopping

Petaluma’s downtown has antique shops, clothing boutiques, home goods stores, and a great used bookstore (Copperfield’s). The buildings are beautiful — Victorian-era facades with actual character. It’s walkable and pleasant even in the rain.

Lagunitas Brewing Company

The famous craft brewery is headquartered in Petaluma and has a spacious taproom with food. It’s a fun, lively place to spend an hour or two on a rainy afternoon. Tours are available if you’re interested in the process.

Movies

Sometimes a rainy day calls for a movie. Petaluma has a movie theater, and there’s something deeply satisfying about seeing a film in the middle of the day while on vacation. You’re on coastal time — you can do whatever you want.

For families with kids

Petaluma has more options for entertaining kids on a rainy day. There’s a children’s museum, bowling, and indoor play spaces. If you have young kids going stir-crazy after a morning in the rental, a Petaluma excursion will save your sanity.

The Cheese Trail

The area around Dillon Beach is one of the best cheese-producing regions in America, and a rainy day is perfect for a self-guided cheese trail. All of these are within 30 minutes of Dillon Beach.

  • Cowgirl Creamery (Point Reyes Station) — The anchor. World-class artisan cheese, beautiful retail space, tastings available.
  • Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co. (just outside Point Reyes Station) — Home of the famous Point Reyes Original Blue. Their farm shop has cheese, butter, and the story behind their family operation.
  • Nicasio Valley Cheese Company (Nicasio, 20 min) — A working dairy farm producing Swiss, Italian, and American-style cheeses. Smaller operation, very friendly. The Nicasio Square is excellent.

Hit all three in an afternoon, buy your favorites, and assemble a cheese board at your rental that night. Add some crusty bread, a bottle of Sonoma wine, and you have a rainy evening that rivals any restaurant dinner.

Oysters in the Rain

Here’s a secret: eating oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co. in the rain is actually magical. The outdoor picnic area is partially covered, the bay looks moody and beautiful in the gray light, and you feel like you’re in on something that most people miss. The oysters don’t care about the weather — they taste just as incredible.

Call ahead or check their reservation system, as outdoor tables can still fill up even in winter. Bring layers and a rain jacket. It’s an experience worth getting a little wet for. Check our dining guide for more details on oyster farms in the area.

Bodega Bay (25 min)

The fishing village of Bodega Bay is about 25 minutes south and makes a good rainy-day excursion.

Sonoma Coast Visitor Center

A small but well-done visitor center with exhibits on local ecology, history, and the coast. Good for a quick stop, especially with kids.

Bodega Head

If the rain lets up even briefly, the short hike at Bodega Head is stunning in stormy weather. The headland juts out into the ocean, and the views of crashing waves are spectacular. It’s a short, easy loop — maybe 1.5 miles — and you can turn back if it starts pouring again. Whale watching from the headland is excellent in winter and spring.

Bodega Bay restaurants

Several restaurants along the harbor serve seafood and comfort food. Spud Point Crab Company has legendary clam chowder (the line is worth it). Fishetarian Fish Market serves excellent fish and chips. Good fuel for a rainy day.

The Truth About Rainy Days

Here’s what we’ve learned from years of living on this coast: some of the best Dillon Beach photographs happen in the rain. The moody skies, the dramatic light, the mist hanging in the bluffs — it’s stunning. If you have a camera or even just a phone, put on a rain jacket and walk the beach during a break in the weather. You’ll come home with images that make people ask, “Where is that?”

There’s also something about a rainy day that strips away the feeling that you should be doing something. On a sunny beach day, there’s pressure to be outside, to be active, to optimize every hour. A rainy day gives you permission to just… be. Read. Cook. Talk. Nap. Watch the weather. That’s not a wasted day — that’s exactly the kind of day most of us desperately need.

So if it rains during your Dillon Beach trip, don’t be disappointed. Lean into it. Some of our best memories here have been made with rain on the windows and nowhere we needed to be.
